There is something special about settling into a story you do not want to leave. Sometimes, a softer background or a color you love makes that little reading space feel more like your own.
That is why we made ao3skins.org: a free, fan-made place to find original AO3 site skins and create your own. A small way to give something back to a community that gives us so much to read.
Find a skin. Make it yours.
Browse original color palettes, see how they look, and copy the CSS to use on AO3. If you love a skin but want to change a few things, open it in the generator and adjust the colors and buttons without writing CSS yourself.
You can also use a palette as a starting point for something new. Preview your changes, save your designs in My Local Skins, and download the CSS when it feels right. The collection and generator are free to use.
Your designs stay with your browser.
No ao3skins.org account is needed. The generator saves your edited skins locally in the browser you use, rather than to a cloud design account. My Local Skins lets you preview, continue editing, and delete them.
To use a skin on AO3, copy its CSS into your AO3 account’s Site Skins settings. Our illustrated installation guide walks you through it.
